Dogsledding in Temagami TOUR DATES
Our trail system starts right from home and rolls through beautiful forest, while crossing ponds and lakes. The splendid Temagami wilderness is draped under its magical winter coat. All WINTER
Area
Our professional guides are ready to help facilitate your adventure on over a million acres of crystal clear lakes, and rivers that create the largest interconnected canoe route system of North America! Majestic old growth pine forests and the rich heritage of the Anishnabai people are only parts of what make dog sledding and canoe tripping in Temagami an outstanding experience.
Itinerary
Our dog sledding weekend starts on Saturday morning at our Base Camp on Whitney Lake. After a review of the personal gear and clothing you will need for the trip, we will go over some dog sledding instruction: dog handling, harnessing, commands, and driving techniques. It is soon time to pack the sleds and venture off for an exhilarating dog sledding day.

We will have lunch on the trail, and later get to either an outpost cabin or heated wall tent that will be home for the night. Cozy up by the fire and reflect on your day. You will always have the opportunity to participate as much as you like, helping us care for the dog teams and prepare camp.

The evening brings its own ambience. The toasty fire dries out our clothes and warms up the sleeping bags, while the smell of dinner fills the air. Outside, as the temperature drops, a majestic sky lights up. The dogs serenade the night sky by howling in unison, resting and recharging, curled up in the snow outside.

On Sunday, after the morning dog care, and a hearty breakfast, we will head out for another great day of dog sledding, exploring a new route, and returning to base camp in the afternoon. You and your sled dog team will come in sharing a new confidence and a special bond. Beside the unforgettable memories, you might also take home a fondness and appreciation for winter you had not known before.

FULL DOG SLEDDING WEEK (7 nights):

Get into a Musher's Boots!

The 7 night program starts on Sunday morning at our Base Camp on Whitney Lake. The day will be mostly dedicated to dog sledding: you will learn about dog handling, harnessing and psychology, driving techniques and commands. Then we will head out for an afternoon trip, to try both dog sledding and snowshoeing, and make a final adjustment to backpacks and our clothing system.

On the second day, we depart for our great adventure! Dog sledding routes follow "Nastawagan", the traditional trail system of Temagami. This territory we respectfully share with wildlife such as moose, lynx, wolf, beaver, and otter. Destinations include the fascinating Conjuring Rock, Temagami's world famous Old Growth Forest, Devil's Mountain, Anima Nipissing Lake, and Maple Mountain. Along the way we travel on beautifully maintained trails and windswept lakes, admiring majestic cliffs, and we'll feel the heritage of the Ojibway People, who have traveled the area for thousands of years.

On the trail we set a good pace, traveling a daily average of 4 to 6 hours, with group lunch and scenery breaks. In the mid to late afternoon we will stop to set up camp. Mushers of the day are responsible for bedding and feeding the dogs, while the others start setting up nights accommodations. By the time evening arrives, there is a stack of firewood by the door, and equipment is drying around the woodstove. Tonight's chef is adjusting the spices for dinner, while we all enjoy a hot soup, sitting comfortably on a thick mattress of balsam boughs.

After a relaxing evening, we easily fall asleep in the warmth of the tent and the peaceful silence of the wild.

We will return to base camp after five days, feeling rejuvenated and filled with long lasting memories. We are positive you will not look at huskies or winter in the same way after this trip!
